How Tramadol helps with pain relief?
Tramadol is quite a unique and original painkiller medication. It's a highly effective treatment for relieving moderate to severe pain of various natures. Tramadol is an artificial formulation, 4-phenyl-piperidine, which is similar in its structure to codeine. This medication affects the GABAergic, noradrenergic and serotonergic parts of the nervous systems. In the beginning, Tramadol was developed by a German pharmaceutical manufacturer and sold under the brand name Tramal. Later, Tramadol was produced through license by many other pharmaceutical companies all over the world under different brand names. It is usually available under the names hydrochloride salt and Tramadol hydrochloride (Tramadol HCL). This medication is available both in oral and injection forms for convenient use in many circumstances, and is easily bought through a normal prescription in most countries as it is not a controlled substance.
Pain is definitely quite an unpleasant experience. Usually, people have burning or shooting feelings as a form of pain, but there are also more unpleasant types of sensations like neuropathic pains, which are caused by more complex health conditions. Tramadol is known to be a very effective and unique analgesic due to its strong painkiller effects and unpronounced opiate effects. An amount of Tramadol between 100gms to 400gms is usually enough to deliver the required and immediate pain relief effect. Still, certain side effects can take place in rare cases such as dry mouth, drowsiness and nausea. However, in most cases when side effects take place they usually wear off in a very short time. When the course of Tramadol ends any side effects also cease.
Tramadol delivers its analgesic effects by modulating the GABAergic, noradrenergic and serotonergic parts of the nervous systems. It is also known to show a slight agonist effect over the µ-opioid receptor. Non-opioid properties of Tramadol contribute to its painkiller effects. Still, it's not possible to be eliminated in full with the use of the µ-opioid receptor antagonist naloxone. Tramadol works by modulating serotonin levels thus any other serotonin-affecting medication will interact with Tramadol leading to modulated effects of both. This may lead to unpleasant and even harmful side-effects, especially when combining Tramadol with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. In such cases chemicals increase the effect of 5-HT while inhibiting Tramadol metabolism. Thus such properties make it possible to use Tramadol in cases of neuropathic pain.
Using simple words it all means that Tramadol is a painkiller, which works by affecting certain chemicals and receptors in the brain, blocking pain signals in the nervous system. The brain doesn't receive any signals of pain and thus there's no feeling of it. This works for most cases of moderate to severe pain.
Tramadol has other applications too, sometimes seen as a recreational substance due to its mild opiate-like effects. Of course, it cannot be compared to the effects of actual opium or stronger opioids. That is why it's not recommended to use Tramadol before having to drive or operate heavy machinery as it can affect awareness and cause drowsiness.
